Endeavor Hall

Endeavor Hall has always been the heart of the Clayton community, playing a vital part in the community’s social life and civic development. For approximately 135 years people have gathered in the hall to worship, mourn the departed, dance, celebrate weddings and other festive occasions, hold classes and 4H meetings, roll bandages during wartime, and train dogs. Until 1995 it housed most public meetings: people gathered to debate and deliberate important issues, form new community organizations, elect officials, and, in 1964, vote to incorporate the City of Clayton.

The Methodist Episcopal Church built the hall now known as Endeavor Hall in the 1860s for worship and fellowship. It was probably built by volunteers on land donated by Joel Clayton. In the early years, circuit-riding preachers linked the small rural community of Clayton with Martinez, Antioch and Somersville. Needing a larger church, the Methodists sold the building to the Congregational Church in 1894 for $500.00. That church’s Endeavor Society used the building and it became known as Endeavor Hall. After Congregational services ended in 1916, volunteer trustees continued to maintain the hall so that adults and children could gather to learn, share information, and celebrate festive occasions. Several generations of volunteer trustees cared for and maintained this humble wooden building set on a stone foundation: they fixed it up with a new roof, painted it when necessary, added a kitchen, and then a stage (c. 1930s), to meet the community’s growing and changing needs. After the October 17, 1989 earthquake it was determined that the building was unsafe for general public use and, in 1990, the trustees deeded the property to the City of Clayton. The City Council continued to meet in Endeavor Hall until 1995 when the Clayton Community Library was built.

The Endeavor Hall Rehabilitation Project, which restored the building, exemplifies the power of common purpose in a community proud of its heritage. The restoration of Endeavor Hall was completed in February 2001. It is a triumph for the City of Clayton and the City Council (which invested Redevelopment Funds in the restoration project), for several generations of community volunteers who cared for and maintained their beloved hall, and for the many residents and groups dedicated to the preservation of historic sites. Endeavor Hall will continue to be the heart of the Clayton community, and although it is freshly painted and meets modern building standards, it was apparent to everyone who attended the February 10, 2001 dedication ceremony that “it had not lost its soul.”

The City of Clayton was awarded a Governor’s Historic Preservation Award for 2002 for the restoration and reconstruction of Endeavor Hall. The award was presented on December 6, 2002 in the Governor’s Council Room with many proud representatives of the City of Clayton.
